Descripción del producto

Julia Livia Rufa is horrified when barbarians invade Rome and steal everything in sight. But she doesn't expect to be among the taken! As Wulfric's woman, she's ordered to keep house for the uncivilized marauders. Soon, though, Julia realizes that she's more free as a slave than she ever was as a sheltered Roman virgin.

It would be all too easy to succumb to Wulfric's quiet strength, and Julia wants him more than she's ever wanted anything. But Wulfric could one day be king, and Julia is a Roman slave. What future can there be for two people from such different worlds?

I must say, as a Harlequin, I wasn't so sure about this product. Sometimes they lack depth. Also, this is not your typical Regency or a book with a Scot running around in a kilt. However, the idea of a captured slave to a barbarian (And what a hunky barbarian he is!)in an era many know about but kind of gets put on the back burner, was just too intriguing. There was also the delimma of a spoiled, beautiful aristocrat becoming said slave. Would she have the spirit and courage to stand up to these barbarians?
In fact, these two very different people come to know each other, and themselves, delightfully. Mrs. Allen's characters are alive with strength, courage, flaws and deep emotion. The heroine is not your typical chin jutting heroine, but a delightfully real combination of vulnerability and strength. The hero is not typical, either, but a strong, fierce warrior who does things that are so typically male and so sensative, one is amazed, yet laughs out loud. Funny and full of excitement, as well as historical facts my World History teacher would have been proud of my learning (even if it wasn't in a text book) I would recommend this book to anyone! Boo-yah! Mrs. Allen!

I was pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoyed this book. I agree with the other reviewers that this is a nice change of pace for historical romance. The settings, characters and plot were refreshing. There were no (or very little) silly misunderstandings or outlandish stubbornness you come to expect from historical romance. I also liked that there was another female character challenging the lead female protagonist for the gorgeous hero. It was an added twist and a realistic situation. The quick ending was a little predictable, but definitely worth a read.

I was utterly amazed as to how much I like this story. The title is sooo stupid, but the plot, the, they were so good. I love both the heroine and the hero. One thing I appreciated is that there were few misunderstandings. This couple actually talked to each other. You have to warm into the story, but by the 4th chapter, the story is already moving. Good and funny read.

Must say, It was like eating stale chocolate this one, but that's how I seem to find a lot of the Harlequins. It lacked something. Maybe it was tension, edge to the characters or depth. Wulfric was too good. Bordering boring. I liked his squire better, he developed more through the story. The whole master/slave thing can be very interesting to play with but it was never fully explored in my opinion. If I find myself wanting to rewrite many passages in a book to make it interesting I find it was a waste of money.

As other reviewers have already said, I loved the different setting and time period. I also loved the H and h, they were well written and appropriate for the time period I think. I hated the fact that right from the start of their intimate relationship there was always the sense that it was temporary and that the H would marry for political advantage. I'm convinced that it was the way of things in those times but I always like commitment when the main characters become intimate. t's not a favourite plot line for me that the other woman was waiting in the wings and was so jealous of the h. I totally didn't enjoy it when the other woman and the h had a physical fight over the h being a whore and having some jewellery from the H. This lack of commitment and uncertainty went on for way too long into the book. The ending was really good and made up for a lot though.
