It does have a plastic casing, and the attachments seem a little wobbly, but they're holding up just fine. I believe another reviewer remarked that the slot for adding dry ingredients was a too small, and I have to agree. But I don't mind. The top has to be lifted and the sides scraped down anyway. At least with this one I don't have to lift the top and scrape *under* the dough/
batter for a good mix as I did with the once-fantastic and now overpriced hunk of junk that costs at least twice as much. It comes with a cover but the design of this is so well done I leave it uncovered just to show-off how nice it looks.
I found the on/off function a little confusing at first, but then I discovered the "rev your engine" button and fell in love. Instead of having to manually crank up the speed by hand when the flour is added, I hit the second button and let the machine do that part for me. Yes, it's loud. If you had that much power you'd be loud, too. The once-great one doesn't exactly purr, either. Unless I want to pop close to a thousand for one of the finer brands, it's a choice between the once-great and something else. This one clobbers the once-great and wins. I will never again pay a small fortune for a stand mixer that fights me every step of the way.
UPDATE: I wish I'd put this through more paces before writing the glowing review. I do make a lot of bread and think this is the best I've ever used for large batches and made often. But that's it. Nothing else seems to work well in this machine. It's just too large for whipping up egg whites, and it doesn't do well with cake batters at all. I don't know if I'd gone all doe-eyed over it's capabilities with dough or if something in it has already broken down, but it now seems to have only two speeds: the slow start-up for adding flour to dough and tornado speed.
It's difficult to express how embarrassed I am to have lead anyone astray with my review. It's simply not a good all-purpose mixer. Not even close. I will be keeping it, even though it has a large "footprint" because of how well it works for breadmaking, but there is definitely another stand mixer in my future.
