Waiter, There's a Clue In My Soup! Five Mystery Stories (English Edition) Versión Kindle
In the title story, "Waiter, There's a Clue in My Soup!" two police detectives sort out a poisoning case over lunch at the deli, with a little help from a foodie in the corner. (This story was nominated for a Derringer award in 2003.)
"The Hoosegow Strangler" was the first story featuring Mick and Casey, a pair of young gunslingers turned detective. In this locked room story, a witness they were guarding is murdered, and they have to solve the crime to preserve their reputation.
"Trail of the Lonesome Stickpin" finds Mick drugged by a pair of pretty femmes fatales, and he has to figure out what happened before Casey shoots him. (This story was put forward for an Edgar by its publisher.)
In the fourth story, a killer believes that all he needs is a strong "Alibi" to pull off the perfect crime, but he finds that works against him.
In the final story, "The Promise," a teenaged girl has to keep her brutal father from turning her brother into a killer. (This story was also nominated for a Derringer in 2007.)
(This collection is 16,000 words long, or equivalent to about 60 pages of a mass market paperback.)

The title story is both a whodunit and a howdunit, all less than ten pages long. A woman is found dead in her hotel room after picking up Chinese takeout food for her party of five. However, there’s no trace of poison in any of the remaining containers, and none of the other diners suffered ill effects. This story reminded me of the “Five Minute Mysteries” many genre fans like. It’s a breezy, enjoyable story, although readers have to wait for the author to dish out all the clues as she goes along.
The only other contemporary story in the collection is “Alibi.” This type of story often appears in publications like “Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine.” A man wants to kill his wife and arranges what he believes is the perfect alibi. In a scene reminiscent of “A Place in the Sun,” he takes her out in a boat to the middle of nowhere. The story has a reasonably enjoyable twist ending, although the author takes too long to explain it.
Readers will find three very different Western stories once they finish these two present-day tales. Two of them feature a husband-and-wife team of gunslingers, Mick and Casey. The pair are featured in some of the author’s longer works where, presumably, their characters are developed in more detail. They sometimes work as freelance deputies and bodyguards as needed and are pretty good frontier detectives. “The Hoosegow Stranglers” is a rare piece, a Western locked-room mystery. Mick and Casey guard a man recovering from being gunned down in an alley. But the killer somehow returns to a third-story room to finish the job as they protect the only door into the room. The killer was also under guard in another building with no means of escape other than another guarded door. Mystery lovers, especially locked-door fans, will enjoy this one.
The other Mick and Casey story, “Trail of the Lonesome Stickpin,” doesn’t fare as well, as the author struggles to find a consistent tone for the story. Once again, Mick and Casey are on guard duty, this time protecting a jewel-encrusted stickpin locked in a safe. However, Mick falls victim to the charms of a mother-and-daughter pair of con artists who want the stickpin. They drug Mick and seduce him in their efforts to get the safe key. Mick then finds that a jealous wife is tougher to deal with than a pair of thieves. Unfortunately, readers find that getting through the confusing narrative is even more challenging.
The collection’s last story, “The Promise,” is the most traditional Western drama. But, it’s also the longest and weakest story. An abusive, Faginesque father sends his children to rob a general store. He wants the storekeeper’s money; the boy in charge wants food that the family desperately needs. The story is too melodramatic to be effective, either as a crime story or domestic drama.
Three of the stories in “Waiter! There’s a Clue in My Soup!” are worthwhile, but the other two don’t work. On that basis, I’m giving the book a three-star rating and mild recommendation. The author displays talent at traditional mystery writing but doesn’t fare as well in the longer stories. She hasn’t fully mastered the recipe for Westerns in this collection.
