Of all the games I played in 2016 (Mafia 3, FFXV, COD, f12016 and a bunch of others). this game left the biggest smile on my face and fondest memories in my head. Even after I returned the game (more on why later) I still find myself missing it.
The setting of the san francisco bay area (Im from the UK so no idea if oakland and silicon valley counts) was vibrant and each area had their own distinct vibes and atmospheres. the NPCs were interesting to interact with and the characters in the game all felt well written and brought to life by great voice acting. As a millenial who doesn't like hipsters or other millenials, I found this game a blast to play through. the driving mechanics were fun and each car had their own characteristics. the hacking mechanics felt cool and it allowed me to navigate puzzles and missions with a vareity of different tactics. the online features felt nicely implemented and it allows users to wreak havoc on other players during their games.
Now onto the bits I didnt like. the online mode is surprisingly short. there arent anywhere as much activities as GTA online and you can literally do all the online stuff in 2 hours tops. On top of that, whilst the game was fun to go though, the story was just too short. even if you played for 3 hours a day, you can complete the game in 6 days (I got a platinum trophy in that amount of time). the vehicle upgrade system felt a bit convoluted and could have been simplified a lot more. above all however, my biggest gripe is that once you finish the game, there is literally nothing left to do as you explore all the areas through the game anyways and the side missions can be completed quite easily before the final chapter. because I had nothing to do, I just decided to return the game less than 2 weeks after getting it.
Now about how this game compares to the competition. after playing this game, I decided to youtube the 1st game and was shocked by how bad it was. It is because of this no-one wants to get WD2, yet it got me thinking, how many other games are a case of sequels = better. the best comparison I can make is Saints row 2 to Saints row 1: SR2 was more enjoyable and bat-*** crazy than SR1 (a trait SR3 improves upon even more), whereas SR1 felt like an rubbish GTA clone for xbox 360.
The biggest game to (obviously) compare Watch_Dogs 2 is of course GTA V. Whilst I admit GTA Online does provide a lot more for players to do; the gameplay, the story, gameplay and characters of Watch_Dogs 2 feels a lot more fun that GTA V. GTA V in which players get kicks killing people, yet you try doing this in Watch_Dogs 2, you'll feel like your wasting time. Watch_Dogs 2 allows players to have more freedom in exploring the game, pranking NPCs and other players and taking part in a lot of weird and wonderful missions. it courages people to use their heads consider their actions, whereas GTA V is about all guns blazing. The main character marcus is a lot more likeable than franklyn, michael and trevor combined and the supporting cast are more memorable. even the main villian of the game, whilst similar to that of GTA V, felt more of a villian than a parody. Whilst San andreas in GTA V has mixture of LA and the dessert, the environment feels nowhere near as vibrant as Watch_Dogs 2.
Despite spending 2 weeks with the game, it left a great impression on me. If Watch_Dogs 2 could flesh out the online features and simplify the car modification app, this would be THE game of 2016. For now, I implore everyone reading this article to get this game. trust me you wont regret it.
Rather than just a one button press to activate hacks, you have a bit more choice at hand. By holding L1, you now have four choices (depending on what you are hacking); as an example: Something that can explode, you can either make it explode right away; place a proximity field to make the unit explode when an enemy enters within a certain distance from it, or create some noise (make it spark) which will attract enemies towards it. With doors, you can open them or even power off (stops enemies opening them). Furthermore when you unlock the ability to hack cars, you can stop them, reverse, accelerate and even put them off course (so much fun).
Also, added later in the game to your arsenal is the RC bot and a quadcopter. The RC bot can be used to scout enemies, get through vents and hack terminals; the quadcopter can't hack anything that requires a USB input, however is still just as handy. Combining these two makes the game feel a bit more stealthy.
As for the Story and side operations, I thoroughly enjoyed it all and personally really liked the characters from the overly tech lover Wrench to the socially awkward Josh. The whole point is to shaft the bad big companies exploiting every day people, gain as much following over social media to help for their final big operation.
As for trophies, I rarely platinum games however this game is a breeze for trophy hunters as most are unlocked through the story progression, with the odd side ones like buying 25 cars or doing 25 scout locations when in fact there is 57 available. The hardest trophy was finding a NPC throwing up and taking a photo of them, it's a luck or the draw running around the area of a bar.
Whilst I felt money was well spent with this game, it doesn't really have much replayability apart from the odd bounty hunting missions, to my knowledge there is no game+ to allow you to start the game anew with all your unlocked abilities and you can't replay missions even once you've fully completed the story, so I ended up trading it in.
All in all though, this is a game I would recommend.
