When we first got it, daytime temps were in the mid 80's, nights in the low 60's. Pool temp was getting down to 78 - 80 uncovered, too cool for DW, a bit refreshing for me.
After 3 days of keeping the pool covered the pool temp was up to 90 deg... absolutely brilliant! This week the temps have been in the mid to high 70's, nights from 48 - 53 and the pool is STILL 86 deg and swimmable.
Since the cover is translucent, we keep it on during the daytime and always cover it back up after swimming. I run the pump with it on and there is no problem with doing that.
Another benefit is that it reduces the amount of top off water needed to keep the pool full. We could see the mist rising off the pool after the sun went down and the amount of water vapor rising was incredible, especially on these cool, relatively dry nights here in SC. We've only had to put water in once in the past 3 weeks.
I haven't installed the reel yet but it is no problem pulling it out of the pool. I'll put it on the reel next year and just fold it up for this winter.
I have no idea how long it will last so jury's still out on that one, but even if it only lasts 3 years it's worth every penny!
The product came in a timely fashion and was shipped well within a strong "bag". The cover is certainly heavy duty, weighing more per foot than my previous pool blanket. The material is slightly cloudy, but should be clear enough to allow sunshine to penetrate through easily to warm the pool, which is the primary reason I purchased this product. I initially chose a product with diamond shaped bubbles because it had a higher heat rating. The reason I shipped to this product is that the bubbles appeared to be larger in the image - that was an error on my part.
Although the material is stronger, the bubbles on this product are smaller than my previous pool blanket. I would estimate that they are about half the "thickness" of my previous blanket and they are more widely spaced - or perhaps they are smaller in diameter. Either way, the result is that I estimate this blanket will provide less than half of the insulating properties of my previous solar blanket. Since heat retention is the "soul" of a solar blanket, this is a huge disappointment. If I had seen the material in advance of my purchase, I would not have purchased this product. The previous blanket clearly sat on top of the water and this blanket sets more down in the water. I cannot hold heat as well as the previous blanket.
Also, the warranty on this product is a prorated warranty. The advertisement for the product conveniently failed to mention that. It twice mentions a "six year warranty"; but the full warranty is only for the first year. If is actually fails during the sixth year, they owner will have to pay 95% of the cost of a new blanket, plus shipping costs both ways. After just the third year, the owner would have to pay 65% of the replacement cost plus shipping costs both directions. So, what you really get is effectively a two year warranty. I didn't buy the product because I planned to use the warranty, but I'm pretty sure if it failed after the first year, I would just write it off as a loss because it would be more effective to (1) get a new blanket and (2) replace it with a blanket that actually retains heat.
I don't really care for leaving negative reviews. One could easily check my review history and see that. I love great products and usually leave great reviews for those. I usually skip leaving reviews for the "not so hot" products. In this case though, all the positive reviews was one of the three main reasons for purchasing this product. I would sure have appreciated it if I had known the facts above before I made my purchase. I hope my review helps you make your decision regarding this product.
Update 515/2016: After being in use for less than a year I have found that, due to exposure to the sun, this product has "shrunk". Whe we cut Otto fit our pool, the width and length were just a little bit too long (less than an inch). I wanted it that way so it would touch the sides. Now the edges miss the sides of the pool by almost 3 inches. That is on the long side. The "sides" (our pool is irregular) miss by a little over an inch. So, if you purchase this item, it might be worth planning on an inch of shrinkage for every 10 feet.
Update 5/5/2018: Got the cover out to put on the pool and found that over a third of the bubbles are cracked and one of the seams is separating. I had to be very careful handling the material because it is getting brittle. If it makes it through this season (doubtful) that would be four years - which isn’t horrible. Hardly a six year product though.
Would I buy it again? Sadly, I’m going to see what’s out there comparable and make that decision before I expected to.
My only suggestion is you MUST get a reel to help manage this thing. They're very cumbersome to get on and off without the help of a reel, and if you want to get the most benefit from it, you want to keep it on as much as possible.
This particular cover seems to be very durable, and definitely does the job. I'll try and remember to update after a year of use.
