So far, I am very pleased with this sharpener! I have owned it for a few weeks, so the school kids and I have all used it. It sharpens the pencils very well. I sharpened about 40 pencils in the first 15 or so minutes I had it. NOT A SINGLE pencil tip has ever broken! The sharpener suctioned to the laminate counter top beautifully. I think it looses its suction when it's not in use, or about 10 minutes, maybe. But as long as your are using it to sharpen a few pencils, it works great. Just do not suction it in a spot that it can fall. As long as it is on a table, it will be fine.
The kids have not walked off with this sharpener, it stays in the kitchen so it can be suctioned to the counter top. The toddlers don't play with it, because it is not motorized. And it only has two pieces, the base and the cover that stays securely in place, so the kids can't disassemble it in a million pieces. It has an integrated pencil width selector dial that can not snap off, like other sharpeners can.
I highly recommend this sharpener to anyone!
P.S. Two months have passed, and I still love my pencil sharpener! No more excuses from the kids that they can't do their homework because they can't find a sharp pencil in the house! All the pencils in the house are pin-point sharp!
1 Year Review: It's now November 2011. A YEAR LATER IT IS STILL GOING STRONG! I still love my sharpener. It even got dropped on my tile floor, the worst damage it sustained was that the front face plate popped off. I super glued it back on, and it's as good as new. Nothing else on the sharpener was broken. My kids and toddlers sometimes walk off with it so they can sharpen their colored pencils for coloring, but I can find it. Other sharpeners would have been completely dissembled with all the parts lost. So even though you do have to reset the suction cup base every time you want to sharpen a pencil, it's worth it to me because at the end of the day... it 1)sharpens pencils, 2) the sharpener is still intact will all of its three pieces accounted for, and 3) it's sturdy, it hasn't broken yet for me. (I read other reviewers where it did break, and that is sad, but I haven't had that problem and I recently gave birth to my 7th child! My oldest is 11, five of them boys!)
April 28, 2014: I lost the pencil sharpener about a year ago. It walked off, and it never came back. I looked high and low, I interrogated my 8 kids (6 boys, 2 girls). "Not me" must have been the last person to have seen it. It had been through a lot in our family. RIP. Now it's time to buy a new one!!! 'Cause I know it's a good one! I miss it so much! I've been through other electric sharpeners, and dollar store sharpeners in the last year, but none of them compared.
If you're anything like me you've just spent an hour or two looking over page after page of pencil sharpeners and read scores of reviews only to be more confused than you were at the begining of your search.
Well, don't get disheartend because this Westcott sharpener is the answer to all your needs. It's beautiful retro styling, sturdy construction, and terrific sharpening ability make it a no-brainer addition to your shopping cart.
Pro's: (1 Star)
1= sharpens pencils well (* But, if the handle brakes, it makes the entire product worthless junk!)
- Handle broke after only 1 year & 9 months of use
- Suction doesn't last- needs to be remounted often
* Homeschool family with 3 young girls using it daily. I'm Very upset that it would break so soon. All the broken handle reviews were made after I bought it. I haven't tried contacting the company, but after reading other reviews, why try? I've seen reviewers of other products say that if they wrote a review that noted a problem with the product, they were contacted by the company who then tried to correct the problem. 33$ is *Not* worth this bad quality and bad customer service.
[Side note: Having lived overseas for the last 7 years, in one Westernized country and 2 third-world countries, one thing that sets the USA apart is the customer service! So sad that this company disappoints that characteristic.]
On KIDS - I don't let the kids anywhere near this sharpener. Children destroy sharpeners; they put pencils in at destructive angles and myriad, non-pencil items inside, too. So I cannot speak to the negative review from teachers, IMHO they have unrealistic requirements from a sharpener... put differently, they need tanks for sharpeners, a tank that I have yet to discover. I'd love to hear from someone who has.
