On June 22nd, 2011 I ordered a Western Digital 120 GB Scorpio Blue 100 Mb/s 5400 RPM 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Notebook Hard Drive - WD1200BEVE for my laptop. At the time this was a really reasonable amount of laptop storage at a decent price. Western Digital has a long standing reputation of high quality and reliable HDD's. This product worked great as expected, and outlived the remaining time I owned the laptop. Having had hard disk drive issues and failures I would be quite hesitant to purchase any other brand. Our data is too valuable to trust with a generic.

I have an ancient 8 yo Gateway laptop that I'm still happy with. It was state of the art when I got it and still has advantages I prefer over the newer laptops and notebooks. I'm a big WordPerfect fan, and this older Gateway and the Windows loaded on it support WP and Quattro Pro. Unless something's changed lately, it seems WP does not make a version for Mac, my desktop. Also, every new version of WP seems to mimic Word more closely and Word is useless. So I prefer the older version of WP.

Unfortunately, in spite of taking every precaution I can think of, sometimes a virus gets to the Gateway laptop. The first time, I took it to a computer repair shop that claims its geeks are super. NOT! Cost $200 and when I got it home, not only had they loaded all sorts of their own programs on it, the pop-up ad virus was still there! I replaced the hard drive with one bought at a big box store for half the price of the so-called repair. The replacement was 120 GB, but the Gateway only recognized 80 GB. No problem.

But the next time a virus struck, the big box store no longer stocked compatible hard drives, so I turned to Amazon. This 80 GB hard drive more closely resembles the original hard drive. So far, so good, knock wood. But maybe I should stock up another just in case?

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Brought new spark of life to an older notebook 3 de julio de 2009

I upgraded a 30GB Hitachi drive (made in 2002 I think) in an older Pentium III Sony Vaio notebook with the 120GB version of the EIDE Scorpio Blue drive and it made a noticeable improvement in speed. I copied the old disk using Acronis True Image (had to "fix" the MBR with MbrFix.exe to get it to boot) and it worked great. Too bad the selection of EIDE drives (both HD and SSD) are limited and more expensive, but it you want to make an older notebook usable longer, upgrading an older drive is a great way to bring "new life" to it.
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Excellent Drive Choice for Older Hardware 6 de septiembre de 2011

The WD1200BEVE was purchased as a replacement hard drive for an old Toshiba Satellite 2105CDS Laptop. The install was easy and the drive works well. It is good choice for older laptop computers that need the older PATA hard drive interface. 120 GB is also good capacity choice for hardware that has a BIOS that does not support 48 Bit Logical Block Addressing. BIOSes that fully support INT13 extensions and 28 Bit Logical Block Addressing can use drives up to 137 GB and if you use the FAT 32 file system and Scandisk for error checking the drive, Scandisk will work with drives up to 128 GB. 120 GB is a good size giving you a reasonable capacity for storage and is within the limitations of this type of hardware. It is always a good idea to check with the computer manufacturer for the latest BIOS update before you do your upgrade as this usually takes care of most hard drive compatibility issues. I am pleased with this drive as it is much faster than the drive it replaced and it is very quiet. I have done many computer upgrades and have had good luck with Western Digital hard drives. If you know what you are looking for you can usually find it on Amazon.com at a good price and many times with free shipping as it was with this drive purchase. So double check your computer specs and documentation and check with the computer manufacturer's web site for upgrade parts available for your make and model so you get the right drive for your machine. I hope this info is helpful to you.

Western Digital 320 GB Scorpio Blue 100 Mb/s 5400 RPM 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Notebook Hard Drive - WD3200BEVE
In an effort to save money during rough times, I decided to repair my Dell Inspiron 600m from college days. The Dell hard drive failed and I saw a 320GB for $75. This drive has 4 out of 5 stars because it is an easy install for a newbie (like me). Just make sure you buy PATA/EIDE drive NOT SATA. Based on the other reviews, I just needed to re-use the adaptor from my previous drive to make the connections fit. I eventually returned the drive immediately because of my lack of computer knowledge and I could not move forward. If you not a newbie, you could probably know what to do next but I didn't. I successfully installed windows XP on the hard drive however, it would not boot. The BIOS could not recognize this drive and I was not successful at finding help on the web. I emailed Western Digital Support and they were unable to assist, they provide generic links that did not help me. The Dell website (although it shows it works for Dell 600m) did not provide any support other than it was "compatible." You can go on the Dell website for hard drive upgrades and you can see feedback. I got too gigabyte greedy and returned the 320GB. I have re-ordered 120GB we'll see how it goes.
