The zone mode was the highlight for me and I have spent many hours trying to beat my perfect lap record. I seem to get stumped around the same lap (Zen) when the place goes silver or gold - I call it "ping pong" time where I do nothing but bash into the walls. Its just to damn fast lol. Some of the tracks are really trippy and suspended in mid air.
The only bad thing about this game is that I ended up sticking to one track that I loved (moa therma) and never really bothered with the others and some of the music I found a bit to much. I love drum n bass but I am very picky too so that's just too bad for me. there are extra tracks on fury so I will check them out too. Another amazing thing about this game is that you can race on all of the tracks BACKWARDS if you want. that doubles the amount of tracks you can play. each corner is like a new one even though you know how the turn is and where it will be. these tracks include the zone mode.
this game has endless playability, its that simple.
This game is any racers dream, it has it all and it is extremely fast.
Wipeout HD is presented in a native resolution of 1080p and running at 60 fps. It looks absolutely gorgeous. The ships are expertly designed, futuristic modelling and vibrant colour schemes add greater dimension to their high-tech looks. The race tracks are nothing short of spectacular, exquisitely detailed and bursting with life. Anulpha Pass glows and shimmers under dim lights; the track itself is covered with continuous lights that whizz in front of you at great speed. Sebenco Climb is situated on a snowy mountain, twisting and curving gracefully around the icy slopes. The lighting is another strong element, bouncing off track surfaces and adjusting brightness as you pass through darker areas.
Zone mode was first introduced in Wipeout Fusion; it is without doubt a fantastic inclusion to the series. Racing environments are completely devoid of textures; instead they are replaced by solid colour schemes. Sound design is excellent, the ships sound powerful as they boost their speed or launch weapons at opponents. The soundtrack is fantastic, a mixture of electronica, and drum and bass. The selection of music is very appropriate to the fast paced nature of the game. If you get bored of the in-game music, then create your own playlist on the XMB.
Many of the tracks have been ported from the PSP versions of Wipeout Pure, and Pulse. Some may .lnd this to be an element of unoriginality, but to those who haven’t played those versions then it shouldn’t really matter.
There are 8 tracks in total and 12 anti-gravity ships to choose from. Each ship varies when it comes to its specifications, this includes things such thrust, speed, shield and handling. If you’re a beginner then it’s wise to venture into the Racebox mode and start working on your skills. Here you can choose a single race, speed lap time trial, tournament and zone mode. Even as you build upon your skills, selecting the awesome Phantom speed setting and Elite difficulty will have you sweating. Zone mode is a joy to play; your ship will automatically increase in speed as you pass through zones. Reaching certain zone levels I will change the colour scheme of the track, a what’s even greater is that the track will react and to the song that is playing. By this I mean, a race track will show an equalizer effect as the music pumps through your speakers. Once the speed picks up you will rarely blink.
The campaign mode is split into different categories, ranging from easy challenges to some absolute
age inducing types. The weapons roster is unchanged from previous games but the carnage looks better than ever. Using the Quake is a personal favourite; unleash an energy wave that ripples with great force down the track. Being offensive is a great tactic, but thinking about defense is just as essential, picking up shield power-ups or absorbing weapons to boost your energy level. The great thing is that you’re always made to think during a race, go all out on the attack, or stay reserved to keep your survival chances at a high. There is also a fantastic photo mode included which allows you to take some high quality snaps during or at the end of a race. Motion blur, shutter speed, saturation, focus and full camera rotation options. It’s very easy to use and you’ll be surprised at how good some of your pictures will turn out. Last but not least, trophy support is added for all of you hardcore pilots.
If I were to criticise anything then it would be the steep learning curve. Wipeout fans will feel right at home and slip into their racers with ease. If you’re new to the series then prepare for a tough grind from start to finish.
The single player modes are brimming with content and the multiplayer mode adds a greater dynamic to the experience. Races are easy to set up and there are options to customise your own race. Up to eight racers can take to a track. The races run very smoothly and server issues are near enough nonexistent. I was trying hard to detect any lag during gameplay and to my amazement there was hardly any. it’s an amazing achievement considering how fast these racers are moving and how chaotic the destruction can be when your weapons do the talking. There are also leaderboards so you can put up your best time trial lap times, zone mode scores etc. Personally it was very addictive to keep improving on my statistics, and it was exhilarating to try and reduce my lap times or better my scores.
Wipeout HD is a fantastic title and puts many full retail games to shame. It may be a port from
existing PSP games but that little device can never handle the graphics that the PS3 serves up. The campaign is meaty and very challenging, the single player modes will help to perfect your skills and ii,the multiplayer will take you toe-to-toe against the worlds best.
