The only bad thing is the relience of the scale to transmit and store the data to Withing's servers. What IF the company went out of business? I would end up with an over-priced scale with no where for the data to get transmitted to. I wish there was an option to automatically store the data on your iPhone, iPad or computer. But other than that, the scale works wonders...it's great at keeping track of your weight over time and have all that data in your iPhone/iPad.
First of all it looks beautiful. Very nice build quality and even the box looks like something I'm used to seeing from Apple. We went with the white scale and it looks great. Way better than anything else I've ever seen or used.
Setup is easy, and over the past few weeks we've had it we haven't had any problems.
It also seems more accurate than our old scale. Aside from the weight, the body fat measurement is more consistent and does seem to track properly based on my workout/diet/weight changes. Electrical impedance still isn't very accurate, but I get the feeling that this is consistent enough for trend tracking... which my previous scale wasn't good at.
The software is kind of mediocre though. It gets the job done, but I'd like more ability to dig into the data.
There's also currently a bug and they aren't sending body fat data to TrainingPeaks, which is the partner service I use. One of the best reasons to get the Withings is that it works with a metric ton of online fitness sites, which almost no other scale offers. Everything from FitBit for the general health crowd, to TrainingPeaks for us obsessive triathletes.
I submitted a support request, and it's a known issue, but no fix for weeks. Oh well.
Well for a start, tracking the results was tedious. And when it invariably went up (thank you fish and chips at ever-so yummy restaurant) I'd find an excuse not to write the number down. Here we are in post-Thanksgiving and I'm missing about 10 days of weight tracking.
So when this scale popped up in the early Cyber Monday sales, I grabbed it. Three figures is worth it if I don't have to write anything down ever again, but can still track progress.
Setup was mostly hit, with a bit of miss. It joined my WiFi network without problem (it can't do the 5GHz band, so make sure you have signal on 2.4GHz). But when it came time to associate the scale with my web account it didn't want to play - at least not according to the configuration utility that was downloaded (Mac). Upon logging into the web account, however, it saw no scale was associated and had me stroll through some hoops (no jumping required) and the scale was quickly and easily associated.
Now I get to watch depressing numbers every morning - hopefully becoming less depressing as time goes on.
I checked the scale with my doctor's scale, and it seems to be accurate. It was very easy to set up, and even easier to use: just step on!
Good job, Withings. And good job, me: I've lost 20 lbs.
