This has always been one of my favourite stand-alone Vances - while it doesn't have the scope of his series (e.g. Araminta Station, Demon Princes, Planet of Adventure), it effectively creates the different cultures through which our hero travels, which is for me the ultimate pleasure of a Jack Vance novel. That and the exquisite language, which is as well displayed here as any.

I’ve read a few Jack Vance books recently. If you are a fan of his I would guess that you would very much like this novel. If you are not familiar with his works I would recommend starting with some of his short stories to see if you like the way he writes. He has his own strange and unique style. He commands a wide vocabulary and can really go into descriptive detail in areas that have nothing to do with the plot. His focus in the sf genre is not so much on future technology but on human culture. This book in particular is about the planet Wyst, which essentially has a communist government, even though the term ‘communist’ is never used. Vance shows just what a failed system it is (an opinion which I am in total agreement with author).
