When Renate falls for local bad-boy Ronny she has no idea what she's getting herself into. After all, she's only 15. She's never had to deal with someone like his Gypsy girlfriend Sabina, who is ready to go to extremes to keep him. And she certainly wasn't expecting to find herself caught up such a dangerous cat and mouse game which gets even more complicated when Ronny's cousin Emil gets involved.

The news about the love tragedy that ensues travels fast in the small village of Loddefjord, Norway, and Renate feels invisible fingers pointing at her. She starts to fall apart under the pressure. But was it really Renate's fault? Will she ever find out what really happened? Each malicious whisper at school increases her freefall. Can she stop her own destructive behavior before it's too late?

First of all, you must keep in mind the book is for young adults, specially for girls. It is important as the whole plot focuses in a girl's everyday life called Renate. She suffers most issues a girl of her age may have in addition to other existential problems that include drug dealers, obsessive women and a couple of casualties that mark the protagonist very deeply.
The whole book is written in a way that keeps you interested and reading. Either you identify with the girl or you are just intrigued or scandalized by what happens and want to follow up.
What I specially like of this book, as a traveler I am, is the indirect hints of geography and description of areas of interest where the whole story happens. Also, it provides a general idea about how modern adolescents in Norway behave in groups. Of course you cannot generalize but gives a wider understanding of what's going on.
I think the language used is quite accessible and helps non-native speakers to develop more vocabulary as the story keeps you reading and trying to find out what happens to Renate who, by the way, you sometimes want to slap her in the face to make her react.

I already reviewed this book on the UK Amazon but I wanted to share my thoughts with American readers because this was such an incredible good value read on my kindle and was my companion throughout this years vacation.
We are invited to a small town in Norway, a detail which I just loved, for it brought the flavour of a place I have never visited. The story though is so universal that it could have taken place in any city or village as it captures so effortlessly archetypal experiences of coming to terms with love, life and its trajedies.
Even though I am considerably older than the protagonists I found myself gripped by the intrigue. I strongly identified too with the romantic rollercoaster that is the life of Renate the main character. I think this work would transfer perfectly to the small screen and would make a wonderful tv dramatisation and series. I look forward to more from the talented Ms Rusanen.

This is a story anyone can relate to, anyone who has been in a relationship and had to learn how to cope with the complexities of love, desire, jealously, curiosity, trust, hurt and a number of other emotions tackled in the book.

i found myself willing Renate (the lead character in the book) make the 'right' choices and decisions. Then when she chose her path, i became compelled to see how it would play out in the end.

You'll find yourself thinking, 'would I have done that'? or 'i know someone that happened to.' That's why i really enjoyed this book as it looked into the dymanics of relationships: parent and child, best friends, extended family and lovers. throwing up senarios we may have experienced in our own lifes and can draw parallels with the characters in the book.

This book i would happily recommend to anyone

I was asked to review this book by the author.

The first half of the book in my opinion was slow. It talked about Renate's attractive to bad boy Ronny. It makes you wonder why Ronny who is in his early 20s was attracted to or played games with 16 yr old Renate in the first place.

There is a traumatic event that happens in Renate's life. It takes a few years for her to recover from it. In the end she opens her eyes and heart and heals.

I find myself wanting to know what happens later on with Renate, Ronny and Sabina.

Although slow in spots I did enjoy the book.

Makes you stop to think how you would react if you had to go through what Renate did. Would you react like she did? Would you act better or worse? I hope no one has to find out.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Review From Eva's Sanctuary 12 de junio de 2012

Renate is almost sixteen when the stories begins. She doesn't have many friends and is not the type of girl that boys chase after. She is not overly interested in boys until a dark stranger taps on the window of her friend's car. Renate has to do some real searching to find out the guys name. In the process, she is strongly warned against getting involved with him. He has the real "bad boy" image, married and has a son. There is something about Ronny that draws at her and she just can't stay away. Ronny turns into the addiction that takes her life on a free for all.
As time goes on, Renate gets involved with Ronny's cousin Emil and gets caught in a game of cat and mouse as her relationship becomes more serious. Tragedy ensues and Renate becomes the target of malicious whispers in her small village in Norway. She moves away in hopes of starting fresh; but her troubles only intensify. Will she be able to resolve her issues and get off of her destructive path before it is too late?
This is a debut novel for the author and the first book in a trilogy. I have to say Katja has come up with a winner here. The story line is well written and flows smoothly ; but gets just a bit wordy at times. Our two protagonists, Renate and Ronny, both have some major issues. Renate falls for a guy who should be out of her reach, but she becomes addicted to him like a drug that she just can't quit. She has numerous other issues; but the biggest seems to be her drinking. Even though the topic of alcoholism is not mentioned, I would say she is bordering heavily on being an alcoholic. She uses it as a major form of escape and frequently drinks herself into oblivion. Ronny is a real bad boy who gets himself entangled in drugs in a big way. Emil, Renate's major love interest has problems of his own of which she is totally unaware until it is too late. This is a wonderful story of coming of age, love, and finding the light at the end of the tunnel. If you enjoy a good story full of tension and unrest, you will surely enjoy this one. I for one can't wait to see where this one leads.
I wish to thank the author for providing me with a copy for reading and reviewing purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. I was not compensated in any way except to receive the book to review.
