Original review: I ordered the unit on July 1st and I still don't have a working unit over a month later. I read all the reviews and thought this printer would be great, but my experience has not been such. I printed the "rook" shortly after receiving the unit. It was perfect. I printed about 5 more small items successfully, then it never printed again. The unit was unable to calibrate, the platform wouldn't raise, and material started spitting out everywhere. I was immediately sent a new unit (sans heated bed) and it did exactly the same thing.
UPDATE October 7: The reason for the printer failure seems to be from voltage spikes shorting the circuit board. I would strongly encourage any Zortrax owner to plug their unit into a surge protector and NEVER remove it. I hope Zortrax uses a more robust power supply in future units, but using a surge protector is not hard or expensive and it will save you a lot of trouble.
PROS: Prints come out perfectly every single time. Precision is as good as the claims they make. It's impressive.
Z-suite is very nice. Features are added regularly.
The heated and perforated bed performs nicely, but there can be some peeling on the largest parts. The Version 2 bed is definitely better. I have not experienced peeling on the Version 2 bed whatsoever.
Customer service/support is GREAT. I would recommend this printer solely on my customer service experience alone.
CONS:The one gripe that seems to surface often is with the z-suite software. I'd like to be able to have more control over the raft and support. Some prints really don't need so much raft and some get covered in support where it isn't needed. There is nothing more frustrating than pulling a finished part off the printer and breaking it trying to get the support and raft off. This has happened to me numerous times. The machine is slow (which is for accuracy and that's fine) but I wish it didn't take 10 minutes or more just to get to the actual print.
The wires that connect to the heated bed are fragile and can easily break. I've already had to repair the smaller wire. I hope this is fixed in future revisions.
This printer and any other decent ABS machine really needs to be enclosed. Buy the enclosure for the M200. It's worth it.
If you are looking to print with ABS, I can't recommend anything but this machine in this price range. This is my 8th printer and my favorite for ABS prints.
- leaking print nozzle, there is oil coming out of the nozzle and i can already tell with the amount of time that it takes the nozzle to heat up, that it has lost enough to start hindering performance just 30 days after use!
- did not receive refund for missing door panels and they are now selling it for $1999 on amazon (the price that should have been what i paid)
-x-axis has started to malfunction; the x-axis stop is not correctly operating causing the print head to continue moving into the frame of the unit.
*** I was under the assumption this $2000+ machine was going to be a pleasant experience due to the other reviews everywhere I WAS WRONG ***
Amazon is great with their returns; I am using my new Zortrax m200 and it comes with everything on the listing! this print was 12 hours long and I have 2 hours left. It is coming out FLAWLESSLY compared to the last printer I had. It came with the updated firmware preinstalled, and I believe the heated bed has a "zortrax glue" on it already. The printbed has a sleek feel to it apposed to the last one. I will continue to update this review as I use my new printer. (I think the one I received was a dude & outdated model)
The filament gear has begun to stutter and not pull the filament. total print time on this newly replaced printer = 21 hours. I am beginning to think these printers are junk. I had a FF Pro before and although it required tinkering, at least it did not fail on me so quickly. Sent email to support, just awaiting the reply on how to fix this. I have read that the ribbon cable needs to be replaced. Seems straight forward and easy to do, hopefully they over night it to me as this down time is causing me money (again.) Thanks Zortrax for selling me junk two times in a row. :-) I was honestly going to purchase the even newer zortrax printer coming out ($3,000) however, I'll take my money elsewhere since you can't even perfect your first model. LOL
I am officially done with the zortrax printer. I the cable failed within 24 hours of printing. I received my replacement and was back in business. 24 hours later I am plagued with the same exact issue. I will return this printer and look into something better. (i thought this was the best printer on the market. autocalibrating bed plate, closed source filaments, etc.) DONE
My particular printer also has an issue where the Y-axis gets stuck and ruins prints. After weeks with tech support, it's still a mystery, they gave up, but now the vendor wants me to do more.
It seems like a really nice, well designed and well built product. But the main thing it's done is make me appreciate every single thing about my Makerbot--from the bells and whistles that save me a ton effort and filament, to the basics that models just print reliably.
