About TV Tuner Cards. Maybe its because i'm using windows 7 on an Atom PC but i bought a Hauppauge 1196 which does not have on board encoding. This means all the video encoding is done by the processor and there isn't much processor to spare with Win 7 installed so while watching TV it stutters severely then eventually freezes.
I'm giving this board 5 stars because the hardware didn't give me any problems, it performs as expected, and OS/accessory installation was a breeze. Great product Zotac!
Everything runs pretty well, except that I noticed my temperatures were getting pretty hot. The cores are ~40-45'C on average even when the system is just idle. One of the sensors is reporting ~60-70'C on idle too, and that's supposed to be the graphics I believe. I'm not sure if these are due to me running Ubuntu, or if the chips on this board are supposed to get that hot. I am pretty happy with the performance otherwise. It's slowish when I try to use it to browse the web but that's due to the Atom of course. As a file server it seems to be doing an acceptable job.
I've also been using this to digitize tonnes of cassettes to 96k/32bit audio using Audacity. Box runs 24/7 without issue.
I'm not getting the performance I expect with vdpau on 1080p mkv format movies, but still hacking away to see what I'm doing wrong (others suggest no issues with that)...
NOTE: I do have another ION board, Asus AT3IONT Deluxe (about $210) which has basically the exact same feature set - plus includes a PSU brick, USB/IR remote, better heatsink, and Bluetooth, but missing just the DVI port (it has HDMI & Analog monitor).
I have one little issue with such products, I understand the use and purpose of the small form factor products, but with the ION chipset, it would be possible to make DTX or micro ATX version(more connectivity) as the chipset can support more I/O options; would be nice to have a pci-express x1 slot along with the x16 and the mini pci-express (a mini pci-express to pci-express x1 is $80), to change out the nic if it fails or use an intel nic, which gives me better throughput in my application. I suppose expanding the options will compete with some desktop offerings; not a serious gaming rig though.
Make sure you use the fan that comes with this board on the CPU heatsink. Without it, you will most likely kill your CPU after a few hours. That said, it takes very little air flow across the heatsink to keep the board running cold. The board will run this fan at a very slow speed and you will not hear it running.
