Excerpt: ...A variety possessing excellent qualities, started in poor soil, and in an unfavorable location, with even fair cultivation, mtght not pay for the pains taken. Again, our very best sorts planted in the very best soil, and in the most favorable situation, but without thorough cultivation, and a correct system of pruning, would bring but little pleasure to the mind of the planter and as little profit to his pocket. Our subject being Seven Points in Grape Culture, we make the vine itself the first to consider. The variety should be the best, whether for home use or for the market, and this may be readily determined by consulting your home nursetyman. It should be a vigorous, well-rooted vine, one or two years old. The next consideration, the proper place to plant it. A southeastern or southern exposure has so often been recommended as the most favorable site for the vine that I scarcely need repeat it here. The descent may be gradual, or if it be even a iteep hillside, it is just as well, if, only, washing of the soil could be prevented during times of heavy rains. Level ground is far preferable to a northern site and, indeed, is not a bad selection for a vineyard. THIRD STEP--THE SOIL AND ITS PREPARATION. It need not be very rich, in fact it is best that it should not be: moderately productive soil is all that is required at the outset. It should be free from sod, deeply stirred and thoroughly pulverized. The planting of the vine is next in order. The distance apart should be 10x12 feet or 12x12; some who have planted 8x8 feet have found the distance too close. Dig the holes gradually sloping, large and deep, at least eighteen inches at the lowest point; separate the roots so they shall not cross each other, having them extend in as many different...
