I saw THE ROBERT CRAY BAND live at the Kent Stage (2013) in Ohio thinking during the show I wanted to hear just a bit less of his later stuff, in particular the "This Time" album (and whatever happened to "Some Rainy Morning" ?). I believe it was during the encore I heard "Time Makes Two" for the first time.
I have been trying to find a LIVE recording of it ever since. Until now.
It's not surprising - at least not to me - that "Time Makes Two" is the finale song on COOKIN' IN MOBILE led by the purveying keyboard sound of Jim Pugh coming across like its own string orchestra. Quite impressive. And love the way RC combined the rolling cymbals for that "orchestra of sound" with Pugh's organ and his own quick, stinging guitar chords.
And The Cray Band is impressive in its own right with all lending an additional hand in song writing credits (led by Pugh's additional pen). This 4-man band also has Richard Cousins on bass and Tony Braunagel on drums. A solid foursome that play well together, with Pugh and Braunagel looking nothing-like-musicians dorky. Yes, a fine case of looks can be deceiving.
The Cray Band also plays Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' On Top of the World" (I don't get tired of that one); and add 2 "later" songs I truly do like: "Chicken in the Kitchen" (about as humorous and suggestive as Robert gets) and the fun for sure "That's What Keeps Me Rockin".
And Pugh's (again!) Gospel-ish solo on "One in the Middle" is an inspiring buildup to the songs closing.
I was watching/listening to dvd as I wrote this and COOKIN IN MOBILE just got a little better the second time.
A "Lotta Lovin" a little heartbreak are still a part of the Robert Cray 'modern' blue equation. Pretty, blues, and damn nice solos as usual from Mr. Cray.
And that Smokin' -- you know what.
There is a music video extra of young soldier coming home from the war that is predictable; but touching. And, yet, there is somewhat of an odd twist to it.

One of Robert Cray's greatest strengths is his consistency. Since his 1980 debut "Who's been talkin'", Cray has produced a unique brand of contemporary urban soul blues. A few critics have accused Cray of releasing interchangeable recordings, but the fact is that the guitarist has always stayed true to his vision of modern styles within the traditional blues genre.

The Robert Cray Band line-up had been stable for nearly two decades, but after the success of "Live across the pond", a stunning document from his London shows in 2006, Cray viewed the plans for a new studio album as an opportunity to change musical direction. For 2009's "This time", Cray called on his original bassist Richard Cousins, brother of renowned drummer Butch Cousins.

Drummer Tony Braunagel is one of today's most in-demand session players. He gained national attention by joining Bonnie Raitt for "Nick of time" and the follow-up "Luck of the draw". He also played on Taj Mahal's "Senor blues" and has been anchoring the Phantom Blues Band since that time.

Keyboardist Jim Pugh has been with Cray since 1989. His early background in soul and r&b forged a style perfectly suited to Cray's brand of blues. Pugh was only 19 when he was mentored by Louis Madison of the Famous Flames at Pottie Ivory's Stardust Lounge in San Fransisco. Among the many stars Pugh supported were Charles Brown, Jimmy McCracklin and Joe Louis Walker while serving as organist for the house band.

"Cookin' in Mobile" is not only a great recording of Cray's most recent tour, but the DVD of the show plus the extra videos make this the bargain buy of the year. The confidence Cray has in his current line-up is evident in the first three performances, all Pugh compositions. "Our last time" first appeared on "I was warned" while the little known gem "Anytime" is from 2001's "Shoulda been home". "Love 2009" is a highlight from "This time". but here the band stretches out for an intense performance.

Cray's unique style of accompaniment is highlighted on "The one in the middle" from "Sweet Potato Pie". Rather than playing straight rhythm during Pugh's organ solo, Cray repeats a two note octave-apart figure creating tension but never obstructing the keyboard. This track was originally cut with the Memphis Horns, but the sparse instrumentation featuring guitar and organ works perfectly.

The DVD has the complete CD performance, recorded at the Saenger Theater in Mobile, Alabama. A promotional video for 2005's "Twenty" is included here. One of the best anti-war statements from the modern era, it was directed and co-produced by Cray's wife, Sue Turner-Cray."Phone Booth" was recorded at the theater, with Cray joking to the audience "Mobile has changed. They've taken down all the phone booths". DVD extras include band interviews and a photo gallery.

"Cookin'" is not only one of Cray's strongest efforts, it's proof that the reconfigured line-up has resulted in revitalization.

Five time Grammy Winner, Robert Cray & his band have been featured on all of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Fesival DVD's, including the 2010 Festival. Eric Clapton has referred to Robert as the "Keeper of the Eternal Blues Flame". This live concert DVD (& CD) of the Robert Cray Band, performing at the Historic Saenger Theatre, in Downtown Mobile, Alabama, is one of the best Blues Rock, Concert DVD's & Live CD's, ever, and I'm serious. I've reviewed hundreds of concert DVDs & CDs & this is definitely one of the best. The band is at their best, the atmosphere is fantastic, the "vibe", is there, the packed crowed is really enjoying it. It's definitely a 5 star, "First Class", Concert DVD/CD Combo. Robert Cray's Blues Rock Music is a more gentler, smoother type of blues rock than Stevie Ray Vaughan's was.

Robert & his band are definitely "Cookin' in Mobile" on this dvd/cd.

The dvd has bonus material of an extra live performance of the song "Phone Booth". I know exactly what Robert is talking about when after the song, he states "Mobile has changed, there are no phone booths anymore". He's right, I used to live in Mobile, and it has changed drastically over the last 10-15 years. Anyway, this bonus song performance is very good. Also, there is a bonus video of the song "Twenty".

Remember, Robert Cray performed with the late/great - blues/rock guitarist/singer Stevie Ray Vaughan, the night Stevie Ray was killed in a helicopter crash, just after the show. Stevie Ray was from Texas. Robert Cray is from Georgia. Robert Cray appears on the Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute Concert DVD. Thanks!!!

Not only is this just another example of some Great Music from the under rated Robert Cray....You get the rare chance to see him perform it Live also with the concert DVD included in the package...and as I have come to know, it doesn't get any better than seeing them actually performing than just hearing them...and you know what to expect from Robert...But seeing Jim Pugh, a guy that reminds me of everyone's uncle or something, was an unexpected treat to see perform also...Love the whole package...
