Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ...many town histories have been published, some of which are of great excellence. In the Middle West, where the towns or townships have little unity or significance, the county is the principal community unit; and, as a consequence, western local histories are generally histories of counties rather than of towns. During the third quarter of the last century a number of such histories were produced as the result of the historical instincts and individual initiative of the compilers, and such books continued to appear from time to time; but the great mass of county histories produced in the West during the last forty years has been the work of business enterprise, pure and simple--an enterprise which finds its basis in human vanity, in the desire of the average middle-class American to see his name in print and to be able to read in a book glowing accounts of himself, his family, and his neighbors, their virtues, and their achievements. In the compilation of histories of this sort the initiative comes from the publisher and generally no other name appears on the title-page. A number of agents or, as some of the prefaces express it, "a corps of experienced historians,'"are sent into the county to interview old settlers, gather biographical data, and secure subscriptions. The privilege of having a biographical sketch in the work is generally contingent upon subscribing for a copy of it, and a special charge is made for the insertion of a cut. In the case of the better works of this sort, the county records are examined more or less cursorily, and extensive transcripts are sometimes made of early minutes of the county court, of the proceedings in criminal cases, and of other documents which might interest the curious.
