The fifth enclosure, which was ordered before I learned the fourth enclosure was DOA, is fine.
My recommendation is check the voltage levels at the drive power plug end before installing a drive. The voltage for this enclosure is easily check at the white plug on the circuit board. The two center pins are ground. The outer pin near the enclosure center is 5 volts. The other outer pin is 12 volts. In reality all drive enclosures supplied drive power should be check for the correct voltage level to prevent frying a drive.
My Original Review:
After trying other drive enclosures I have settle on this one. Very well constructed, supports both IDE and SATA drives, and the price is great. I prefer the rocker power switch and power supply appears to be well build compare to other enclosures. The aluminum casing does a good job of dissipating heat. I also like the flat front panel that allows easy label mounting. After upgrading my systems with terabyte drives I had several lower capacity IDE and SATA drive that I wanted to use as external USB drives for backups and data transport. Currently I have three of these enclosures. Each of these enclosures has at least 24 hours of continuous run time on them. This means the drive were active, large ZipBacks being preformed, for at least continuous 24 hour period. The totals hours on each enclosure is over 50. No issue so far. Depending on the drive installed and length of use all aluminum enclosures can get quite warm if not hot with use. So did not stack drive enclosures or you risk overheating the drive and enclosure. I also have a Vantec NexStar CS SATA drive enclosure which I like, but in comparison the Vantec enclosure appears to get warmer then iMicro enclosure with the same drive model. I believe this is because the Vantec enclosure is very smooth while iMicro has ridges that help heat dissipation.
