Virus is an argentinian new-wave band hailing from the early '80s who had a huge influence on the rock/pop latin american scene and are known even here in the states. Their name turned out to be somewhat ironically premonitory since their singer died of AIDS. Their sound is poppy new wave with strong rock 'n roll influences so energetic they were at first very resisted by the local mostly bucolic folk-rock scene but ended up being hugely popular, even to these days.
The gig is recorded with a myriad of cameras with old-school editing so you get to see a lot of the playing and facial expressions. I would have loved to see more of the bassist and the drummer, but since they're sessionists they didn't get much exposure. They blaze through 24 of their greatest hits and a (then-new) song with aplomb and the introduction of several guest local singers. The gig is edited with just the necessary amount of in-between-songs banter so it felt like a 60' gig to me, the only reminder of the marathonic duration being my rear end and possibly my hearing since I listen at realistic levels.
Pic : sadly the weakest part of the dvd; it was shot in 4:3 format so you get black bars at the sides and features wrong compression. Pic bitrate should have been kept lower or the master have been authored making use of the whole room of the double-layer dvd. Cramming a 100' gig with both 2.0 and 5.1 audios and a lot of extras in just 6 Gb resulted in artifacting, esp on the dark scenes. It was not that annoying on the big CRT I use for watching SD content, but on led monitor/TV it does look scraggy, hence my knocking off the 5th star.
Sound : blows most of the over 1200 dvds in my collection out of the water. If vocals sound a bit OTT the rest is simply too good-sounding and mixed to be real. First pleasant surprise was having to turn my sub off ( not needed at all; my capable mains pounded the bottom end just perfectly, a rare ocurrence). Loud 2.0 and louder 5.1 mixes that will make the weaker stereos sound like a live PA are featured.
Get it if you're a fan or just curious.
